Changing/Replacing the Input Shaft on a Brush Cutter Gearbox

This How-To will show you how to change input shaft on an Omni Gear RC-30 (brush cutter gearbox). These gearboxes are used by King Kutter, John Deere, Bush Hog, Howse, etc on 4 and 5 foot rotary cutters and mowers. This is useful if your brush cutter has started leaking, if the input shaft is broken, or if you would like to switch from a shear-pin style shaft to a 6-spline unit that can be used with a clutch PTO shaft.

First, you will need to remove the input assembly.

After removing the retaining bolts from the input cap, use a hammer and chisel to carefully separate the input assembly from the gearbox case.

Now, you can begin disassembling the input assembly of the gearbox by first removing the inner bearing from the end of the input shaft.

Remove both retaining rings that hold the input cap to the assembly.

Then, remove the input cap.

Now, you can remove the snap rings holding the gearing in place. Using a hammer and appropriate fixture, move the gearing as necessary in order to gain clearance.

Using a hammer (or press) and the same (or similar) fixture, carefully remove the outer bearing from the input shaft.

The input assembly should now be completely disassembled. Following the procedure in reverse with your new input shaft will yield you a ready-to-install input assembly.

Be sure to add gasket sealant to both mating surfaces to ensure that there will be no leaks on your new gearbox.

With the input assembly fully rebuilt, install the assembly into the gearbox case, making sure to line up the mark on the casting of the input cover as shown.

Finally, you can install and torque the bolts that hold the input assembly in the gear case.

i also need to know how to change the output shaft. I have it torn down but can not get shaft out. have the top bearing and sleave out but the shaft will only come out like a inch and stops. please help

    1. Hi Dewayne,

The output shaft is best removed with a small hydraulic cylinder. If you don’t have one that will fit between the shaft and the housing, a punch and hammer will work to unseat the shaft assembly from the housing.
